  • Renewable energy is becoming increasingly popular; in Poland, its share in final energy consumption was 8.68% in 2009 and exceeded 15% in 2019 (Statistics Poland, 2022).
  • The year 2023 saw a record increase in electrical energy production from renewable sources and a decrease in fossil fuel consumption across Europe. Electrical energy production from coal in the EU decreased by 26% (-116 TWh), reaching the lowest level in history (333 TWh). The closure of coal power plants slowed during the energy crisis, but the structural shift away from coal continues. It is estimated that one-fifth of the coal fleet in the EU will be shut down by 2025.
  • For the first time, the European Union produced more electrical energy from wind than from gas in 2023.
  • Renewable sources generated 27% of electrical energy in Poland in 2023, pushing coal to a record low of 61%.
  • For the first time in Poland, wind and solar energy generated more than one-fifth of the national electrical energy: 21% in 2023, compared to 16% in 2022. The share of renewable energy sources reached 27% in 2023 (up from 21% in 2022), nearing the still official target of 32% by 2030 (with 40% expected to come from yet-to-be-built offshore wind farms).
  • Poland has 12 energy storage systems with a capacity of at least 50 kW, of which five are considered fully integrated with the grid.
  • Network operators’ registers show 12 energy storage systems with a total installed capacity of 1,464.5 MW, most of which are pumped-storage power plants and storage systems using lithium-ion batteries.
